About The Printed Textiles Project

The Printed Textiles Project is an ongoing research initiative which seeks to catalogue information about painted and printed textiles that were produced before the Industrial Revolution (circa 1700 CE). After receiving the Janet Arnold Award in 2020 from the Society of Antiquaries of London, which included a research grant to study painted and printed textiles, Tonia Brown founded The Printed Textiles Project.

To date, Tonia has studied more than 300 painted and printed textiles from around the globe at world-renowned museums, including:

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, New York, USA)
The Brooklyn Museum (Brooklyn, New York, USA)
LACMA: Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Los Angeles, California, USA)
Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (Los Angeles, California, USA)
The Textile Museum (Washington, DC, USA)
The Cleveland Museum of Art (Cleveland, Ohio, USA)
Dumbarton Oaks Museum (Washington, DC, USA)
Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) Museum of Art (Providence, Rhode Island, USA)
Museum of International Folk Art (Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA)
Statens Historiska Museer (Stockholm, Sweden)
Domschatz Quedlinburg (Quedlinburg, Germany)
Domschatz Halberstadt (Halberstadt, Germany)
Germanisches Nationalmuseum (Nürnberg, Germany)
Museum für Islamische Kunst (Berlin, Germany)
Ethnologisches Museum (Berlin, Germany)

As we continue to learn and new discoveries are made, we’ll continue to update the catalogue and blog! Additionally, several new researchers will be joining our team soon, so stay tuned!
